U3A Cosmology

CQU Sydney Street Campus
Building 1, Level 2, Room 2.13
Sydney Street

As most of the audience in this proposed class would be I imagine seniors or middle aged people my thinking is that perhaps some of them might feel that this is a good time in their lives for retrospection, a time to ponder one’s life’s events and think about our existence in general.

There have been many programs on TV and books written on Cosmology. Most are devoted to explaining how we know what we know and to a greater or lesser extent the science behind this.

The emphasis in scientific research today is to explain everything in a secular framework.
As this for some people takes away hope, I will attempt to present scientific information in such a manner so as not to offend people of religious faith and show that there does not have to be a conflict between science and religion.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not going to be a revival meeting.

U3A Cosmology commenced Tuesday 8th October at the CQU City Campus in Sydney Street. The class is held from 10.00 – 11.00 am on Tuesday.

Next week (15th October) I intend to introduce the history and development of our present concept of the Atom. Covered will be the early theoretical development of this concept from Bohr’s Atomic theory to the introduction of Wave Mechanics, the duel nature of matter and the Schrödinger equation describing the Hydrogen atom.
This may sound formidable but in my experience older people like an intellectual challenge. Also this will be presented with lots of explanations and in a relaxed atmosphere; a chance to understand what you could not understand in High School.
The above in my estimation will be the most difficult part of the course but important because it’s the key to what is to follow.
